Treatment options

Inflatable implants

These implants consist of two or three pieces. The two-piece implant includes a pair of cylinders placed in the penis and a combined pump and reservoir in the scrotum. The three-piece implant adds a separate fluid reservoir implanted in the abdomen. These devices allow for an erection that can be inflated or deflated as needed.
Three-piece implant:
This involves two cylinders in the penis, a pump in the scrotum, and a separate fluid reservoir placed in the abdomen. When the pump is activated, fluid moves from the reservoir to the cylinders, creating an erection.
Two-piece implant:
This one is similar to the three-piece one but combines the pump and the reservoir into a single unit in the scrotum, making the procedure a little easier.
Provides a more natural look and feel: When in use and not in use, the inflatable implant looks more natural and feels more natural to the patient.
Adjustability: Ready when you are, the implant can be inflated or deflated as needed, offering greater control.
Discreet: When not in use, inflatable implants are less noticeable under clothing, maintaining a more natural appearance.

Malleable (semi-rigid) implants

These implants are always firm but can be manually adjusted to an erect or flaccid position. They consist of flexible rods that are implanted in the penis. These are simpler in design and operation, but may be less natural in appearance and feel compared to inflatable implants.
Simplicity: Simpler design without mechanical parts, reducing the risk of mechanical failure. Also easier to use for people who struggle to use their hands.
Reliability: More durable due to the lack of inflatable components.
Shorter Surgery - Easier: Shorter surgical procedure time and recovery period.

The procedure

During prostate cancer surgery using the da Vinci robot, known as robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, Dr. Cumming uses advanced robotic technology to remove the prostate gland with precision. This is what usually happens during the procedure:

Virtual Consultation with Dr. Cumming

Your journey begins with a virtual consultation where Dr. Cumming will discuss your medical history, current health status, and symptoms of erectile dysfunction. He will explain the different types of penile implants (inflatable and malleable), their benefits, and potential risks. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and decide what type of implant is best for you.

Presurgical Evaluation:

If you decide to continue, Dr. Cumming will arrange for pre-surgical tests, including blood tests and imaging studies, to be performed at a local center near you. Detailed preoperative instructions will be provided through our secure patient portal, we will describe medications to avoid and other preparations needed before surgery.

Surgery Schedule:

Once the pre-surgical evaluation confirms your eligibility for surgery, our team will help you schedule the procedure in Mexico. We'll provide you with information about travel arrangements, accommodation and what to expect during your stay, making sure you're well prepared for the trip.

Arrival to Mexico:

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by Dr. Cumming's team and taken to your accommodation. A pre-operative meeting will be arranged to review the procedure and ensure that you are ready for surgery the next day.

Day of surgery

On the day of the surgery, you will be taken to the hospital where you will be prepared for the procedure and you will be given anesthesia to ensure comfort. Dr. Cumming will perform the surgery, which usually takes 1 to 2 hours, making small incisions to place the chosen penile implant (inflatable or malleable) in the penis.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Post-surgical care: After surgery, you will be monitored in the recovery room until the anesthesia wears off. Dr. Cumming will provide post-operative care instructions, including how to care for the surgical site, manage pain, and recognize signs of potential complications.

‍You will remain in Mexico for a few days to ensure that the initial recovery is smooth and to attend follow-up visits with Dr. Cumming. He will ensure that you understand how to use the implant (for inflatable implants) and that you are healing properly.

Return home and full recovery

Full recovery usually takes a few weeks. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for approximately six weeks. Regular checkups with Dr. Cumming ensure proper healing and address any concerns or complications.
