Understanding Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. They can cause severe pain and other symptoms when they pass through the urinary tract. Kidney stones vary in size and type, and their presence can lead to complications if not treated properly.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs
  • Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin
  • Pain during urination
  • Pink, red, or brown urine
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Persistent need to urinate
  • Fever and chills if an infection is present
*If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.

How Do We Diagnose Kidney Stones?

Healthcare providers utilize various diagnostic methods, including imaging, blood, and urine tests, to identify kidney stones. If a we suspects the presence of a kidney stone based on your symptoms and physical examination, one or more of the following tests may be necessary:
Urine test: This test checks for the presence of blood, crystals that form stones, and signs of infection in your urine.
Imaging: Techniques such as X-rays, CT scans (computed tomography), and ultrasound allow us to view the size, shape, location, and number of kidney stones.
Blood tests: These tests assess kidney function, detect infections, and identify elevated levels of calcium or other substances that could contribute to stone formation.

Treatment Options for Kidney Stones

Medication

If you have a kidney stone that is likely to pass on its own and isn't causing an infection, your healthcare provider may prescribe or recommend medications to help. These medications can relax your ureter to facilitate stone passage, such as tamsulosin (Flomax®) and nifedipine (Adalat® or Procardia®). They can also help manage nausea, vomiting, and pain, which can be severe even with small stones.

Your provider may suggest prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications for pain relief, but it's important to consult your provider before taking ibuprofen, as it can increase the risk of kidney failure during an acute kidney stone attack, especially if you have other health conditions.

Procedures for Kidney Stones

If you have a kidney stone that cannot pass on its own or is obstructing your urinary tract, we will recommend a procedure to break up and/or remove the stone.

The type of procedure depends on various factors, including the size and location of the stone. Kidney stone procedures include shockwave lithotripsy, where shockwaves break the stones into smaller pieces that can pass through the urinary tract more easily.

Ureteroscopy: which involves inserting a scope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter to break up and remove the stone

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: a procedure for stones that cannot be treated with other methods, involving inserting a tube directly into the kidney through a small incision in the back to break and remove the stones with an ultrasound probe

Laparoscopic surgery: where a small incision is made to remove the stone, with open surgery being a rare alternative if necessary.
